Reflections from TLANZ President to Conclude 2024

As 2024 draws to a close, it’s time to pause for a moment of introspection and look back on an eventful year for the legal profession here in New Zealand. It’s been a year filled with challenges, opportunities, breakthroughs, and transformative moments for all attorneys, judges, law firms, and everyone who dedicates their life to the pursuit of justice.

At The Law Association of New Zealand (TLANZ), we saw tremendous efforts from our members nationally, demonstrating exceptional resilience and innovation in providing legal representation and justice for clients and communities alike. As we step into 2025, we take this chance to reflect on the milestones and learnings of the year past.

A Year of Significant Achievements for the New Zealand Legal Sector

2024 was a remarkable period for TLANZ, marked by considerable progress for the entire legal community. Law firms across cities such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch have significantly evolved in embracing innovative technologies, making courts and legal processes more accessible than ever before. This steady integration of technology resulted in streamlined judicial processes, providing greater efficiency in the courtroom.

This year marked numerous seminars, professional networking opportunities, and conferences, enhancing cooperation and professional development for attorneys across New Zealand. Our continued commitment towards professional education has played a critical role in promoting excellence in the legal profession.

Collaboration and Communication – Creating Impactful Legal Outcomes

One of TLANZ’s central goals is fostering improved communication between all legal practitioners, from law clerks in Dunedin to senior lawyers in Hamilton. Throughout 2024, we actively encouraged an inclusive approach to sharing knowledge and insights. By nurturing such collaboration, we are helping foster an informed, vibrant, and robust legal community.

TLANZ commits itself fully to supporting transparent dialogue and ongoing education, inspiring practitioners across New Zealand to continually hone their skills, stay abreast of legislative changes, and maintain excellence in their legal advice to communities.

Moving Towards a Digital Transformation in the Legal Sector

Digital transformation in the legal sector was also high on our priority list in 2024. From webinars to online workshops, we ensured our members were adequately prepared for high-tech integration within their workplaces. We are proud of our community’s growing digital skills, which have significantly improved client interactions and courtroom efficiency.

In line with this, TLANZ also encouraged engagement with digital platforms for public legal education. We suggest visiting respected local legal professionals, such as lawyer Naomi Cramer, who provides insightful, relevant, and educational content through her YouTube channel.

Emphasis on Ethics, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Legal Profession

TLANZ continued advocating for ethical practise and furthering diversity and inclusion in the legal workplace and courtroom. Our association recognises that a fair and representative legal sector is essential for successfully meeting the challenges ahead. We were pleased to see more attorneys and law firms adopting and championing inclusive practises within their workspaces.

A Moment of Reflection: Spotlight on Noteworthy NZ Legislation

2024 brought about significant attention to compliance, ethical standards, and transparency. To highlight the importance of accurate record-keeping and adherence to ethical norms within our sector, we revisit a key local legislation, the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006, and specifically its emphasis on duties to uphold standards:

According to section 4 of the Act:

“Every lawyer who provides regulated services must uphold the rule of law and facilitate the administration of justice in New Zealand. A lawyer also has important obligations to their clients, including an obligation to act in accordance with all fiduciary duties and duties of care owed by lawyers to their clients.”

View the full Act on the official NZ legislation website.

This legislation remains critical to guiding principles of integrity in our professional conduct and maintaining ethical standards, thereby instilling confidence among clients within our communities.

Looking Forward to a Promising 2025

Entering into 2025, it’s crucial we stay future-focused, identifying and seizing opportunities to further elevate New Zealand’s legal profession. Our collective vision involves continued educational efforts, ensuring our legal representatives are prepared for ever-changing legislative landscapes.

Our vision will be realised through:

  • Ongoing educational initiatives focused on technological advancements.
  • Community involvement programmes enhancing public understanding of legal rights.
  • Continued advocacy for diversity, equality, and ethical practices in all avenues of our sector.

TLANZ remains eager to support and empower our members through these endeavours, working together towards strengthening the justice system for future generations in New Zealand.

Conclusion

As president of TLANZ, my sincere gratitude goes out to every attorney, paralegal, court staff member, judge, and law firm, who made 2024 a year of growth, change, and determination. Every hard-working individual’s collective efforts have undoubtedly contributed to creating a more transparent, efficient, and inclusive legal environment across New Zealand.

Together, there is much more to achieve. I invite everyone in our legal community to step forward with renewed enthusiasm and commitment, ensuring continued innovation and progress within the legal industry.
